Police Competency Test Competition
A select group of Year 7/8 athletes recently participated in the Bluelight Canterbury PCT competition.
The Bluelight Physical Competency Test Competition involves teams of four Year 7&8 students racing through the same test that the Police undertake each year as part of their job requirements.
This event has been running for twelve years and this year was the first year that Oaklands was represented at the competition. In the back of everyone's minds was the fact that the winning team would win an all expenses trip to Wellington to compete in the National Physical Competency test Competition. Both of our teams represented Oaklands with pride and demonstrated fantastic energy, team work, resilience and determination as they raced through the various obstacles.
The Oaklands A team came agonisingly close to taking out first place and winning the trip to Wellington, with less than two seconds separating Oaklands and eventual winners St. Patricks Bryndwer. A fantastic effort from a very skilled and focussed group of athletes.
It is fair to say that the day was a success and we will definitely be looking to make this competition a regular feature of the year 7/8 calendar from now on.
Check out our teams in action.

Water Cycle Poem
Mr. Muller gave the Year 7/8s a challenge of writing an impromptu sentence that uses the key vocabulary of the water cycle. Katie went one step further, she created a poem.
As I wipe the condensation off the class
I see the precipitation come down fast
The droplets run down the stem of grass
Just like the runoff from the hills above
The water in filters to the ground water surface
Then is purified in the aquifer to serve its purpose
Then the sun comes out to evaporate it all up
But there won't be a drought because we're in luck
It will come back down in rain snow or sleet
Then the sun will come back out and give more heat

Another Short Story
Here is Josh's short story
My short story
For this piece of writing I have focussing on my vocabulary and punctuation. I have been learning to: -
- use a range of precise vocabulary to communicate meaning (Year ⅞)
- use all basic punctuation independently and attempt more complex punctuation (eg semicolons, colons, parentheses) (Year 7/8
The pieces of my writing that are highlighted green are where I have shown my vocabulary and punctuation goal
THE BUSH RIDE
As the engine roared into life Shaun started riding round. Then he saw his mate Dan going over the hill out of control. Shaun had a Honda CRF 450 and Dan had a KTM SX 450. They arrived at the start of the Mackley river track near denniston they turned on to the track the track and started riding along.
They pulled up at the first turn off the main track was one way and the track to Stockton so they turned right and that was the track. They found to the highest part and there was a turn off. They turned left thinking it was the track but it wasn't. They kept going and then there was another turn-off and they went right and the track was tight and the got lost... They stopped and decided to build a fire.
Shaun said “We are very close to water” so they checked around and they discovered a little creek so they built a fire and also they made a hut from bushes and sticks. The next morning the boys got on their bikes and rode around looking for a track after a while they found a river and they rode along the bank looking for anything. They found an old hut that had heaps of stuff in it.
They spotted some guns and they went hunting the saw a huge boar charging at them… So Shaun got the gun and shot It was that big that both of them had to carry it. They build a fire and they gutted the boar and then they cooked it.
In the morning they built a help sign and they created as much smoke as they could with the fire. Later that day a helicopter was flying around and it spotted the smoke and it landed and picked Shaun and Dan up. They got home and they were very relieved that they were home

Koru Games
Confidence
In 2015 there was a team of confident outstanding footballers In the Koru Games tournament. We were very excited to be apart of the koru games football A team the boys and myself trained hard and played hard for this moment. The time came to get on the bus and play are first match of football we were extremely hyped up. It took about 30/45 minutes to get there but it was all worth It. The boys and I were working out strategies for the football matches. But I’m not here to talk about 2015 I’m here to talk about 2016’s koru games football A team. Now I won’t bore you by telling you who Is In the team but I will say It’s going to be one hell of a ride. This year we are stronger faster and we are going to demolish all the teams standing In are way because this year Is are year are moment are time.
Work
This year Mr muller and myself and all the boys are committed to coming top 3 In the koru games tournament. I know my boys will work and work and work to be In the top 3 place for the 2016 koru games A football team I have no doubts that we have the potential to come top 3 or even win koru games for 2016. Last year In 2015 football A team we worked very hard but we missed out and came 6th but all the boys would have learnt from that and we Will beat that placing.
Attitude
This year the boys and myself are goal focused on having a great attitude some of these things are said from some of the A team boys on how important It Is to have a good attitude.JackM said
“It Is very Important to have a good attitude because If you don’t It kind of effects your team mates In a negative way”JackH said “I think it Is Important to have a good attitude but It really depends on how your feeling and If your teammates know that you don’t feel 100% about the game that were playing”Jake said “This Is going to be a good year”

Drama
Over the past few weeks we have been running an Arts interchange which will run over the next two terms. There are three rotations - Visual Art, Music and Drama. Here is a reflection from Nick about what he learnt...
WALT: apply the techniques of improvisation to a range of different scenarios.
Improvisation techniques that I have used successfully are never say no to whatever your partner is saying and listen to your partner.
Improvisation techniques that I would like to have more practice and stay in character
The thing that I enjoyed most about this unit of learning was the improv games because they were very fun.
The thing that I found most challenging during this unit of learning was the family portraits game because I was uncomfortable about standing up in ront of a crowd
My favourite improv game was Alphabet because it was very fun and challenged your on the spot skills.
My next step/ something I need to work on further in improvisation is to be more enthusiastic about Improv because it could ruin the improv.
Leadership
Here is a reflection from Monique about what she has learnt about leadership...
We have been learning all about What makes a good leader.
We identified that good leaders show 6 main character traits. These are Integrity, Trustworthy, Resilient, Active Thinker, Goal focused and motivational.
The leadership trait that I think I show the most is, Resilient, because when ever I fail, I am resilient, and pull myself out of the pit.
The leadership trait I would most like to develop is, Active Thinker because, I don't participate in group discussions that much.
Something NEW I have learned about leadership is, you don't have to be a House Captain, or a Head Student to be a leader.
The SOLO level that I reached during this unit of learning is Extended Abstract, because, I can evaluate the effectiveness of a leader.
My next step in learning about leadership is to apply everything that I have learned about leadership to my own leadership roles.
