First Aid Course

Today Room 9 completed a first aid course with St Johns. We learnt that responding to an accident involves:

  • Dangers - what are the dangers to me?
  • Response - calling out to the victim or tapping their collar bone to get a response
  • Send for help - call out for help and call an ambulance
  • Airways - tilt head backwards to clear airways
  • Breathing - check breathing - if they are breathing then the heart is going
  • CPR

Friday, October 31, 2014

On a spectacular Thursday morning, room 9 was given the opportunity to make food with the schools freshly grown vegetables. Everyone made a group of four that we would be making the food in. I was in a group with my amazing friends Rosie, Caoimhe and Abi.

We were first given the picked vegetables like carrots, cabbage and silverbeet that we went and washed because they were growing in soft soil that stuck to them. We then started dicing them into very small bite size pieces. We were also given some rice paper and a tray filled with hot water. I dunked a few rice papers in the hot water so it became soft and and a bit sticky. And then filled it with the cut up vegetables that we made before. I rolled it up being careful with every side trying not to rip any holes. After my group and I had filled some rice papers all of our reading buddy class came to help. My group helped the little kids with filling and rolling it all up. Rosie and I ripped some rice papers by accident while they we softening. After every group had made around 6-8 filled rice papers we then went outside to help water and plant the vegetables. And we left the food to set.

When we arrived at the garden we helped our little buddies put the gloves on and find a watering can. I planted all sorts of seeds with my buddy and we sprinkled water all over every plant we found. We started After a while our food we made earlier had set and was ready to eat. It was the first time most of the class had tried this type of food. We also had a bowl of sweet and sour sauce. We all learnt the benefits of growing your own food.

Hayley's Leadership

Last week I had librarian,I have librarian every second thursday, every odd week, with three other girls.
Last week I read a book to three little girls who were in year 1-2 when I read the book to entertain them more and to feel interested in the book I asked questions that were related to the book which got them thinking about things. The book we read was about a bath tub where every night the bath tub would move to a different pace in the house on of the questions was do you have a bath tub in your kitchen??? the little girls thought that it was a little weird for the bath tub to move and as they said "NO!!!"
"My bath tub stays in the bathroom every night and day and the tub cant move" commented one of the girls. After I helped issue books out for other children in all different ages. All the time we put away the books that need to go back to their place so other children can read the books.
Last week I enjoyed librarian and its a fun job to interact with the joiners.

Be more dog

Yesterday we reviewed our Ruma Iwa Learning Plan. We begun by looking at this video - Be More Dog. As a class we looked at the key messages of this advertisement were and aspects we could relate to us as learners. The two key points were:

  • to take more risks and challenges with our learning.
  • to show more energy towards learning new tasks.
So our motto for this term is "Be More Dog".

My Art

WALT: Apply the drawing and painting techniques

I think Iam at Extended Abstract because I included several strategies in my art, I chose the right places to use them and I seek feedback on how I could improve and changed it to make my plan look better.

The strategies I used in my painting were:
-Shading.
-Included a vanishing point, for example if you were in a car on a road going straight ahead you can see the two sides of the road joining right in the distance, thats the vanishing point.
-Added a horizon line.
-Used shapes and made sure it wasn't to detailed.
-We dipped pastels into paint and used that to create our painting (i found it weird and ended up with a rainbow hand)

Arguments - Writing

Over the past couple of weeks we have been learning how to create effective arguments. Part of which we have been learning to use persuasive phrases to enhance our message and to use connectives to link our ideas. Here are a couple of snippets of writing:

From Caoihme...
This paragraph is a paragraph out of my agument  about why school camps shouldn't be banned. This writing shows the use of connectives. For example I used I believe and from my experience.

I believe school camps are great for getting to know your class better. When you're on school camps you spend a lot of time with your classmates. Some people might say that children can spend time with each other on the weekend but on camp they have fun doing once in an lifetime opportunities with there friends. From my experience you also get put in groups with people that you might not normally talk to this is a good thing it means you make new friends.

and from Isla...
This is a paragraph from my persuasive arguement.I am learning to add persuasive phrases/words to make my writing more persuasive.

Here are some reasons why school camps are not a waste of time.Firstly you can meet new people and make new friends.Students get to know their teacher better and learn interesting things about them.Students may even learn about their good friends!Obviously you are pushed to aim higher and take risks which helps you become more confident in yourself.Clearly, school camps give you many experiences for example competitions, night games like spotlight, risky activities and your teachers holding strict room inspections.Do you want to be part of a group of people who don't want fun for their children? So let all children go on school camps!

This writing shows that I can use persuasive phrases/words.
For example clearly, obviously and do you want to be part of......

Abstract Landscapes

Grace S's art
The lines in my art are around my sun and my sunshine. Around my mountains and my hills. They are effective because they make the shapes stand out. The colours are on my whole painting. They are effective because it makes the painting look interesting. the tone is in my sunshine. It is effective because it shows the suns rays. The simple shapes are in my mountains and my hills. They are effective because you can still tell what they are. Overall my painting is very good because I have tone, simple shapes, bold lines, and nice colours.
